Education protects and empowers children in the poorest communities.
While in India in 2009, I assisted on a voluntary basis at Tiljala Primary School, located in the Tiljala Slum in Kolkata.
One long-term solution to poverty is ensuring that children of poorer backgrounds have access to education.
Tiljala Primary School within Tiljala slum, propels underprivileged children into greater opportunities, and provides them access to a borader mindset provided by their unique programs and staff.
They are encouraged to work hard to complete their schooling with the possibility of being awarded a scholarship at a prestigious private college. Praise must go to the teachers who give up higher paid postings to work in these difficult and sometimes dangerous places.
Tiljala primary was developed along with a food business which employs adults within the local community. A portion of this food goes to providing the Tiljala students their lunch, which sometimes constitutes their main meal of the day.
